Frequently Asked Questions

Fill out our online form here and complete the waiver. Coach Greg will reach out and schedule a day for you to come try a class.

Keep in mind: Only people who have active memberships at BJJ schools can attend AJJ open mat and a waiver must be signed before you step on the mats.

  • Training Gear: Wear proper gear — rash guards and no-gi shorts are the standard. Gi pants are acceptable instead of no-gi shorts. No pajamas, no shorts with pockets, and no tank tops. A sweat-wicking rash guard shirt is required for every class. Wash your training gear after every session to avoid spreading mat cooties.
  • Hygiene: Keep your nails short enough not to scratch or draw blood. Come to class clean, with long hair tied back. Please shower or brush your teeth beforehand — we train in close contact. A shower is available; bring what you need for it. Help keep the bathrooms clean (no “bird baths”).
  • Safety on the Mats:
    • No striking, biting, or finger grabs with fewer than four fingers.
    • No jumping guard.
    • No kani basami/scissor takedowns.
    • Yield to higher belts when groups merge during rolls.
    • Halt takedowns if you might collide with another group or any objects.
  • Respect & Etiquette:
    • Say hello, be kind, and introduce yourself to new people.
    • Raise your hand during instruction to get the coach’s attention, or come up respectfully.
    • Let training partners know about any injuries.
    • Communicate respectfully; do your best not to curse. Remember — kids are always watching.
    • Have fun, but don’t be the “giggly goose” who distracts from training.
  • Tapping: Tap out when you’ve reached your limit in a submission or position. Respect your partner’s tap and release immediately. As you gain experience, you’ll learn how much pressure you can take — but always err on the side of caution.
  • Cleanliness & Belongings:
    • Take your belongings with you when you leave. Pack it in, pack it out.
    • Do not leave blood on any surface. Dispose of bloody tissues or feminine products discreetly — bury them deep in the trash or take them to the dumpster.
    • Wash your training gear.
  • Training Pace: Go at your own pace. We trust your process — your stamina and skill will improve with consistent training.
  • Leaving Early: If you need to leave before class ends, let a coach know so we don’t worry about your safety.

Wear non revealing athletic clothing, no armpits exposed. Sandals and a water bottle come in handy.
